I wonder: Do Americans know about american school buses? Not their existence in general, but how they're seen overseas.

Over here, they're one of the symbols of America, on par with the Statue of Liberty, the flag, the Eagle, and well ahead of any chain restaurant you can name. People won't know any US states, but they will know these vehicles.

The thing is, here in Germany, we don't have dedicated school buses. The general idea is that kids go to school on their own. When that's not practical, they're expected to use (and given free tickets for) public transit. Public transit is designed around this requirement; there are many places where there is a bus, and anyone can get on it, but the route and timetable really only makes sense for school children. In case a dedicated school bus is really needed, that's generally subcontracted out, and the lines either use something like a Sprinter Van for smaller routes, or a normal city or interurban bus (often a used one that's a bit older). School trips are normal public transit, or a rented bus, typically a coach or regional bus.

It's not a perfect system, in the past couple of years there's been an epidemic of people bringing their kids to school in their cars instead of letting them walk, which is less than ideal. It is what it is. But building a dedicated network of public transit lines only for students, and building dedicated vehicles only for that, has never occurred to anyone here.

Of course we know about these buses, from movies and such, but they're as foreign here as cacti or pick-up trucks (actually we're seeing more and more of these here) or yellow cabs (all europeans will assume all cabs in the US are yellow until they actually visit).

You do see these buses here at times, because people still generally like the idea of the US, even if they have a lot of issues with a lot of details, and so folks bring them over, along with stretch limos and stuff (also not really a thing here). And of course, if someone goes to all that trouble, they don't do it to haul school kids, they rent it out for city tours or as a party bus or whatever.

So you see these yellow things as a symbol of faraway places, scenic vistas, some vague undefined idea of freedom that doesn't necessarily hold up to any contact with reality, and it's just a huge part of the whole US aesthetic.

And then you go to a student exchange with the US, and you finally get the chance: You yourself get to ride in one of these iconic chrome yellow buses! It looks just like in the movies! You get in, you drive in them a little…

…and you realise they're shit. Just the worst buses in the western world. Terrible suspension. Uncomfortable seats with weirdly high backs (so they don't have to put seatbelts in, they just restrict how far kids can fly in an accident). Everything made out of the cheapest materials. Turns out the reason why the US uses school buses like that instead of normal modern city buses, which the US has, is to save money and because they just hate kids.

And then it hits you why US Americans say "as American as apple pie", a dish that is made and enjoyed literally anywhere in the world, instead of "as American as yellow school buses". Of course the Americans already knew all this. They got tortured by these things forever. It would never occur to them to see this as a symbol of America, it's just a normal part of life for them. It's a symbol of school and school life and sometimes normalcy, and tells us that these actors getting out of it are supposed to be teenagers, nothing more.

But most people in Europe have, of course, never ridden on these buses. So when they see them in movies and TV, that's a giant big yellow signifier that we're not in Hessen or Wallonia or wherever anymore. A symbol of a different world, one that may be at most a once-in-a-lifetime-experience for most people, just like a picture of a tropical beach, Mayan Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, or Hildesheim (there's no reason to go there twice). And I think Americans don't know that, and that's fascinating.

As a struggling university student in Germany I thought about how it is cannon for Tim and Danny to be coffeebuddies. Sry for my Bad writing but just Imagine: Dani introduces "Club-Mate" to Danny when she came back from a trip to Europe. So he comes to Gotham and gets a Job at a coffeeshop:

Tim was in a rush this morning. They had finally managed to put Riddler back in his Arkham-cell at 5am and when his three days of sleeplessness seemed to finally catch up to hin, an emergency meeting at WE was called in. Almost tripping on his way to get some dead-wish coffee from his favorite shop he comes to a halt infront of a closed door. With a little note displaying the Downing words: we are on vacation.

Frustrated and in desperate need of the black lifejuice he spots another coffeeshop only a few Houses down the street. It looked kinda shabby but beggers can't be picky.

A jingle of a little bell rang out when he entered the small room. Letting His ganze sweep over the few tables that were queezed into the space infront of the counter. It looked comfortable with big chairs and a lot of different stiled furniture. It all somehow fitted together. He had to show this place to Cass, she would love it here.

Looking to the counter, a boy his age, with black Hair and (was that blue?) sparkling eyes grinned back at him. Adoption bait! Bruce can't see him, it would be over! "What can I get you, beautiful?" This got him back to reality. His cheeks flushed pink. "What would you recommend? What's the strongest you got?" The Boys smirk got even wider: "You want it to last or just a big energy-push for now?"

Oooooooh this gets interesting. Normally he would ope for something strong for the moment but this has to last for an entire meeting. His interest was peeked: "the first, please"

Instead of the obvious way to the coffeemaschine, the counterboy turned around smoothly (wow how) went to a refrigirator and got out a bottle of what looked like applejuice. Huh?

Confused he looked at the bottle and back to his new official crush. "If you don't mind the taste, its got enough coffeine to get you through at least a couple of hours." "Oh, my tastebuds are dead anyway, thanks." With the same flashing smile as before, the boy gave him the bottle. He was almost out of the door when a "by the way, next time you are here ask if a 'Danny' is here, that's me!" reached him. With a smile he closed the door.

Opening the bottle, a strange smell came out. With a mental 'fuck it' he downed 1/3 immedietly. Ooooooh. With a quiet "I think I'm in Love" he made his way to WE.

This chapter is told from the perspective of Wonder Woman's Son!Reader

Each chapter will be the perspective of the reader but as the different children since when I originally had this concept, they were all darling/reader characters.

“Hey, I’m going out, do you need anything?” You called out to your former classmate as you grabbed your backpack from the table of the vacation apartment the two of you were staying in. Saying you were former classmates is the wrong word to use, you were a criminal justice major and she was a chemical engineering student, but you both had to drop out due to unseen and sudden circumstances. 

“No, if I need anything I can run out by myself.” She replied and you heavily sighed at her words, knowing what exactly she meant by those words. 

“Absolutely not, that will attract attention and we can't afford that right now.” You snapped back at her as you opened the front door of the apartment. “I’ll be back later, I’ll pick up dinner while I’m out.”

You were around six when your birth parents died in an accident, it was not even just your parents, it was your older sisters as well, your baby brother. You were supposed to be on a family trip to Europe, a final farewell to your older sister who had just graduated from Georgetown University with a major in anthropology and she was going to spend a summer in Greece for an internship. You were on a boat destined for the island of Ithaca, you knew in myths that it was the home of the legendary king and hero, Odysseus, and you knew once upon a time when that king was trying to return home to his wife and son he was stopped by Posedion’s storm. Your birth mother told you that it was just like in the story and you would get through it just like Odysseus did, in a way she was right, you did make it out alive but they did not. You remember when the boat capsized and you can still hear your family’s screams as if it was yesterday, you remember seeing your birth mother’s throat slit by a stray piece of metal that broke off the boat as the back of your head hit a rock and you were knocked out cold, drifting through waters you thought you would die in.

You remember being held when you somewhat came to, you certainly had a concussion, but someone was holding you as you were all wrapped up in a blanket, and the person noticed that you were awake and she rocked you and hushed you back to sleep. It is only when you woke up fully almost a week later after your rescue that you realized what had happened, you had washed up on the shore of the island known as Themyscira, the home of the Amazons. The woman who found you was named Diana, the Princess of the Amazons, the Wonder Woman, and a member of the Justice League. She rescued you from the waves and nursed you back to health, she told you that you were a gift from the gods, she had prayed and hoped for a child with her wife and then you washed ashore. She took you in, raised you, living two lives, traveling between the states and the island you never thought existed, living as the son of Diana Prince and her stay-at-home wife in the United States capital, and then you were the son of the Princess of the Amazons and her bride on Themyscira. You learned how to fight, trained by the Amazons, but they never looked at you differently, after all, you were a male but raised by them, a beloved son, a blessing from the gods to answer Diana’s prayers.

But her blessing means you lost everything you ever had, you remember waking up crying in the middle of the night, remembering what happened to your family, their bodies would never be found, stuck at the bottom of the sea forever more in a watery grave. You remember your other new mother, Diana’s so-called wife coming in when you woke up crying, holding you through it as if she had been through this all before, and eventually you found out that she has been through this exact same thing before. She was a librarian once upon a time, she worked at a small library on the island of Malta, just south of Italy, having moved there to look after her grandmother who fell sick and eventually died, but she stayed, it was her home until it was taken from her. She had fallen into the waters of the sea while trying to ride her bike on a rocky path during a storm, she had woken up in Diana’s arms just like you did, stranded on the island of Themyscira, she was trapped just like you were, Diana’s dream comes true, the sweetest and most gentle person to stand by her side as her wife, and most adorable little boy to raise as her own.

You hated thinking about the past, so you made yourself focus on the future and what needed to be undone.

You now walked the streets of Pittsburgh, keeping your head low and keeping to yourself. You just needed to get what you needed and get back to the apartment before anyone, even in the slimmest chance, recognized you.

“You’re the son of Diana Prince, correct?” You felt like you were going to vomit when you heard someone say that, your first instinct was to run, but you made yourself look. The woman who called out to you was not someone you recognized, she was a beautiful woman, and she somewhat reminded you of the Amazon women you trained in your youth. She just stepped off a motorcycle that she parked on the street corner, her helmet tucked under her arm and another woman stepping off it as well, though she was slightly less put together than the one who spoke to you. She reached out her hand to you to shake, greeting you with a smile. “My father is Bruce Wayne.”

“Wait… you’re… oh my gods.” You knew who she was, you remember Diana speaking about an unfortunate accident where the daughter of one of the members of the Justice League went missing around five years ago, the daughter of the Batman. You took her hand, shaking it with a firm grip. “My apologies, I was worried for a moment.”

“That is understandable, but we are here to help you.” She spoke, shoving her hands into her coat pockets and glancing around the busy street before gesturing to her friend with her. “She’s a Kent, Supergirl.”

“Like Superman?”

“His daughter.” She leaned in closer, whispering into your ear. “We don’t have much time, they are on your trail, Wonder Woman and Captain Atom were spotted on the west side, apparently there was a bomb threat, but I doubt that was the main reason they were here.”

“Are you serious?”

“I am, extremely so.” She replied as she walked back to her bike, dragging along the girl she called Supergirl with her. She jumped back on along with her friend and put her helmet back on. “Get out of sight and stay out of sight. I’ll be in touch when it’s safe.”

Before you could respond, she was already speeding halfway down the road. You knew that you did not have the time to run the errands you needed to, you just needed to get back to where you knew it was safe. You started walking down the streets but soon walking turned into running and soon you were in a full sprint down the street, something pushed you forward, it was to the point where you felt like someone else was guiding you. 

“Look, it’s Wonder Woman!”

“Mama, mama, look! Wonder Woman is here!”

Panic set in as you reached an intersection of the road that a crowd was gathered around, and by the shouts, you knew what was going on. You could barely see through the crowd of people but through the cracks in between shoulders, you spotted a glimpse of raven black hair and the all too familiar shimmer of gold. You turned on your heel, maneuvering your way through the other people on the street joining the crowd.

“Please, I am looking for a young man, he is my son, he has been missing for weeks, I…” You heard her loud voice through the crowd and your heart sank when you heard her hesitate in her words, she spotted you, even with your back turned. You immediately booked it, running full speed down the street, causing a commotion in the crowd when they caught onto what was happening. Your heart was pounding in your chest as you knew that you were being chased, just like back when you were training in Themyscira, but then it was for fun, you never thought you would need to put those skills into motion in the real world, especially being chased by your mother of all people. “Stop! Get back here this instant, young man.”

You kept on running despite her words, you knew that now that you disobeyed her you would get punished if you were caught, maybe a year isolated from the outside world on Themyscira, or maybe she would tie you up in the Lasso of Truth and compel you to tell the location of your friend, and then you would probably also let it slip of your recent interaction. You mentally caught yourself praying, praying to any god who may listen…

Apollo never once answered a single one of your prayers…

You dashed into a back alley, but you felt the vomit rise in your throat as you realized it was a dead end. You felt the sob about to slip from your lips as you turned around to see your mother turning around the corner after you, you expected her to say something, anything, but she did not even look at you like you were not even there. You saw a pained look in her eyes, squeezing her eyes shut and taking a deep breath in and out before turning away and walking off down the alley. You glanced around, finding a tin trash can and you did not even see your own reflection until a few moments later when it reappeared. You had turned invisible. You glanced around, no one else was in the alley, but you spotted an owl resting upon a window ledge, there was one problem with this, it was the middle of the day. Your eyes narrowed at the owl and you took a step forward, your curiosity getting the better of you.

“...Lady Athena?” Your question felt like what a fool would ask or a child playing pretends, so you were only more shocked when the owl nodded, actually nodded. “You… you saved me… tell me, why did you come to my aid?”

The owl took off flying, but it was over the building, not a direction you could go even then you could not follow now, you would be seen. You sat down behind a dumpster, curling your knees up to your chest so that no one walking past the alley could see you…

“Mama, can you tell me about our ancestors again?” You asked your birth mother, you were sitting on the front porch of your old house, a cottage up in Maine. “The ones from your side, from Greece.”

“Not just Greece, my love.” She spoke, her fingers running through your hair as she corrected you. “Our ancestors are from Ithaca, it was once a powerful kingdom, home to some of the most famous heroes in our history.”

“Heros? Do you mean like the ones in the Justice League?”

“No, I mean like the ancient heroes, ones who are more human like us.” She replied, pulling you up onto her lap and pointing up at the clear night sky, all the stars you could see without fail due to the isolation of the area. You followed her finger as she pointed at a set of stars, a constellation. “Those stars there, those from the constellation of Orion, he was set into the stars by his lover and friend, Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and the moon after her brother Apollo grew jealous of his abilities and tried to kill him.”

“And what about us, who are we descended from?”

“A man who loved his wife and son so dearly, he would do anything to get back to them.”

“If something like that happened to you, would you do anything to come back to us?”

“Anything.”

You snapped awake when you felt hands shaking you awake, your eyes opened to find that girl kneeling before you, it was the so-called daughter of Batman you met earlier today. It was dark out when you woke up and you felt as if you were getting over a hangover. 

“You alright, I found you passed out here when I came looking for you.” You felt her hands help pull you up from the ground, but you felt something slip down your lap before you fully stood up. “Doing some light reading?”

“Huh… I…” you looked down at the thing in your lap, it was a book, a book you remember well from your childhood before Themyscira. “The Odyssey?”

“Seems sort of funny, ya know?” You stared at the daughter of Batman with a blank and confused expression. “I mean your mom and The Odyssey is an epic about… ancient Greece… never mind.”

“I do not exactly find it amusing, especially given the circumstances.” You had no idea how this book got here, but when you glanced up at the windowsill where the owl was before you fell asleep she was there again, staring at you with eyes that looked wiser than any you have ever seen before. “My family… both of my families have always taken that sort of story seriously… I wonder…”

“You wonder, what?”

“Don’t worry about it… just some memories about some stories about my ancestors.” 

“Alright, c’mon, we have some work to do.” She patted you on the back as you stood up and you could not help but glance back at the owl, but when you did, the owl flew down landing on your shoulder. Both of your eyes were wide with surprise, but hers merely narrowed at the owl after the moment. “Does the owl have to come with? I don’t exactly like owls.”

“I think she wants to come with.”

“Well at least give her a name-”

“Athena, her name is Athena.”

“Like after the goddess?”

“You… you could say that.”

Ekhlas Al-Azzah is a woman of many talents. She is a teacher, a chef, and a painter. And, she does it all in style. While she saves makeup for special occasions, she told me, she refuses to have a bad hair day. Ekhlas was born with muscular atrophy and has spent her entire life in a wheelchair. She lives in Bethlehem’s Al-Azzah camp, named after her family—the smallest Palestinian refugee camp in the world, comprised of a singular 250-meter-long, densely populated street. She makes her living as an Arabic teacher, and I was lucky enough to be one of her students.

For over 30 years, Ekhlas has hosted volunteers from all over the world to provide her the 24-hour care she needs in exchange for language lessons and, more importantly, to spread awareness about Palestine—especially what it means to be a disabled woman living under occupation.

“Life has become increasingly hard during the last year and a half. Especially in my situation,” she wrote. “Resisting the occupation takes a lot of energy.” Ekhlas is hoping for a brief respite through a trip to Europe next month. “My plan is to travel to Germany, Italy, and Spain to visit friends and hold educational events talking about my homeland and my life.”

And he's also the physics teacher's favorite student. Perfect; definitely everyone's type. 

You know you wouldn't have any chance with him; he's a boy, and you're a boy, even though he's always making a lot of a lot of jokes  about femininity in a teasing way that you prefer to admire from afar. 

One day you told your group of friends about it when they're doing a silly challenge by asking if anyone had a crush or been taken. You expect that they'll all be in awe, but to your surprise, they've said it's nothing new; they knew it since the very beginning when you gazed back in time at him with your unhidden heart eyes. 

You are gritting your teeth in embarrassing, blinking hard, and trying to wash your failure moment away as you cover your face. Instead of bushing on you, your friends suggested you should give it a shot. What if he likes men? You don't know if you don't give it a try. 

You think otherwise. There's no way a guy like him is gay; he might have had a secret relationship with a girl already. Losing hope, your best friends come up with a plan without your knowledge; it'd be good if you're oblivious. 

During the school trip, technically you were supposed to be with your other classmates; however, your girl friend said she was uncomfortable with Jake on purpose and wanted to switch you with your partner, who's a girl, so you could have time with him, Sim Jaeyun. 

You zone out for a moment before realizing this lame plan coming from your group, and as you throw a dagger glance at them, you still switch with her for some reasons. 

Under one roof, once you helped him set up the tent, in return, you got a "thanks" from your handsome crush. Who wouldn't go crazy if you could have your times with your one-sided love? Not only that, maybe you could stare at him in his sleep. 

The night fell upon you later on, and you settled down on the soft, thin bed underneath your skin as you tucked in a blanket, covered up to your chest like a burrito. You wonder what he's up to as you steal a glance at the older man right next to you. Accidentally, your eyes met him, and you quickly turned your face away in a swift motion, feeling all your nerves tense up and shaking. You zipped your mouth into a straight line, pretending to sleep on the spot, back facing him, ashamed or—shy? 

"Hey mn!" He spoke up, in a lower raspy tone under his chin, and mumbled as quietly as possible since he was afraid he would wake the others up. 

Your breath stops midway, clenching tight together. Did you just hear him calling your name, oh Lord? You are unable to turn to face him as you respond to him with a simple "yes." 

"Can I ask you something crazy?" He uttered back, his voice remaining the same, as he looked above the tent ceiling, waiting for you. 

Once again, you thought you were about to explode in any second. If you could eat your fist right now, you would swallow without leaving any pieces. 

"Sure, go on, I'm all ears," you finally reply, pulling in together to sound as natural as possible, but luck is not by your side. Your voice comes out like you've been chasing by a bear. 

Jake takes a deep breath. He narrows his eyebrows in a mad expression, poking his tongue against his mouth, as you turn to face him. He looks like he's about to break things into pieces. 

"Did you like me?" He breaks the silence, and the atmosphere grows thicker instantly. Those sentences are both pleading and terrifying at the same time, as you feel a ping of reality hit you once you process his words. 

You swallow hard, finding good words to answer back. Not even the exam was hard, like confessing your true feelings to your crush. 

"I'm sorry if I do. I'll stop if you're uncomfortable; it was just a silly fee." Before you could finish your words, he burst in, even more upset. 

"Why did you hide such things from me? You supposed to tell me, Do you know how much I try to impress you with all the efforts I put in?" He announced, folding his arms on his chest, while laying down, still looking at the ceiling, frowning. 

Your heart is racing, beating in the wrong rhyme, taken aback by his unexpected statement. All along, is he doing all of those things just for you? You feel like a shrimp. 

"Yeah, you don't have anyone?" 

"Why would I when you're existing??" 

Catching your guard, you cover your mouth with your palm in a shocking experience. This is going to haunt all of your dreams. Jake looks unfazed; his face is slightly blushing, but he didn't care; all he cared about was you. 

"Don't be such an idiot; we're crushing on each other now; we're boyfriends; no more talking; come here!!" 

The last thing you realize is that you're already in his embrace as he tightens the hug, resting his chin on your head as he places a soft kiss on your head. 

"Stop leaving me hanging again; I hate it, okay, beautiful?"
